The 16610 was released in 1989 to replace the 16800, and was one of the models that solidified Rolex's popularity in the 1990s.
When it was first introduced, its appearance was almost the same as the 16800, but it has undergone various improvements over the years, including a strengthened bracelet in 1999, a change to Super-LumiNova luminous paint in 1998, and the addition of a roulette engraving in 2007.
