An introduction to watch maintenance

An introduction to watch maintenanceAn introduction to watch maintenance

If you have purchased a high-quality watch, you want to keep it in good condition, both in appearance and functionality, for a long time.
We will explain the minimum maintenance required for this purpose.

Proper usage

The basic precaution is not to drop it or hit it hard.
Since a wristwatch is a precision machine, it is important to handle it carefully. As for waterproofing, if it is more than waterproofing for daily life, there is no problem with normal hand washing. Make sure the crown is tight before you go. It is recommended to remove the leather or fabric belt as it will deteriorate faster if it gets wet.

Easy care

After wearing, wipe off sweat, dirt, dust, etc. with a special watch cloth, chamois (deer) leather, or soft cloth.
If your watch has been immersed in seawater, tighten the crown firmly and then rinse it off with fresh water.
After washing, wipe dry with a soft cloth.

avoid magnetism

During daily use, the clock may stop or lag due to magnetic products.
If magnetized, it is possible to remove the magnetism using special equipment, but this is only a simple emergency measure and may require overhaul or replacement depending on the part of the magnetic part. You will need.
Please be careful not to place your watch near magnetic products on a daily basis.
Magnetism emitted from smartphones, computers, and TVs is the enemy of mechanical watches, so be careful.

点検、修正

If your watch malfunctions or a part comes off, please contact the manufacturer, store of purchase, or watch repair shop for inspection and repair.
We also recommend regular maintenance even if there are no particular problems.

Regular maintenance

For general mechanical watches, we recommend overhauling once every 3 to 5 years, and for quartz watches, when replacing the battery, including a waterproof inspection.

overhaul

For mechanical watches, the internal machinery is disassembled and cleaned, each part is inspected, and worn parts are replaced. Then reassemble while adding oil for long-term lubrication. Quartz watches are also powered by gears, just like mechanical watches. It may break down due to oil retention inside the machine, battery leakage, intrusion of water such as sweat, etc., so it is recommended to overhaul at the timing of battery replacement.
* In addition to overhaul, the exterior can be polished (finished) to regain a brilliance close to that of a New product.

Causes and symptoms of common watch malfunctions

The clock doesn't work

Is the crown left pulled out? Or is the mainspring not wound enough? Please fully wind the mainspring for both Automatic winding and manual winding before use. In the case of quartz, there is a high possibility that the battery is dead.

The timing when the date changes is strange

The switching timing varies depending on the internal machine, with some models switching around midnight, and others gradually completing switching between 11:30 pm and 3 am. If the time changes around 12:00 noon, the time may be set about 12 hours apart. Please manually advance the time by 12 hours and reset the correct time.

the date is wrong

Except for some models equipped with special mechanisms, manual calendar adjustment is required for the last day of February, April, June, September, and November.

The dial is cloudy

Clouding may have occurred due to sudden temperature changes indoors and outdoors. In this case, it is a temporary phenomenon that will be resolved immediately, but if the cloudiness does not disappear for a long time, repair will be required. If you suspect that water has gotten inside the watch, please request repair immediately.

wet with water

Even if it is waterproof, sweat and moisture can cause rust, dirt, and problems. If it gets wet, wipe it off with a dry cloth and place it in a well-ventilated place away from direct sunlight.

When I shake my watch, it makes a strange sound

In the case of automatic winding, there is a rotation noise when the rotor of the internal machine rotates and winds the mainspring. Some movements make a loud noise, but this is not a malfunction. If the oil inside the machine runs out, it will not rotate smoothly and abnormal noise may become louder, so maintenance is required. If there is an irregular noise, the parts may be damaged, so early inspection is recommended.
