エクスプローラーⅡは、アポロ計画などで宇宙開発が注目を集めていた1971年に誕生しました。当時の腕時計はSFテイストなものが多く、エクスプローラーⅡの特徴的なデザインも、時代のトレンドを取り入れて完成したと考えられています。
初代モデルの文字盤は黒のみですが、第2世代以降の文字盤からは白(アイボリー)も登場しています。黒はエクスプローラーらしいスポーティーなデザインで、白は洗練された印象を受ける都会的なデザインです。世代ごとに変遷はあるものの、インパクトのあるデザイン性は一貫して受け継がれています。

エクスプローラーⅠを踏襲した高い堅牢性と実用性も、エクスプローラーⅡの魅力のひとつです。エクスプローラーⅡには、オレンジ色の24時間表示針と、24時間目盛りのついた固定ベゼルが搭載されています。これを活用すれば、昼夜の判別が困難な洞窟内などでも、すぐに時間を判別可能です。文字盤や針のサイズも大きく、視認性に優れています。24時間針は、時差のある国の時間を示すGMT時計としても活用可能です。
加えて、二重密閉構造の防水システムによって、水深100mまでの防水性能も保証されています。まさに厳しい条件下での使用に適したモデルといえるでしょう。
