About Spring Drive

The model equipped with Grand Seiko 's original movement "Spring Drive" is an epoch-making watch that overturns conventional concepts. In order for a clock to keep time, it needs "power" to move it and a "control system" to control its movement.
Spring Drive uses the mainspring of a mechanical watch for power and a quartz-type IC circuit for the control system. A hybrid movement that demonstrates Seiko's technical prowess, combining the strength of a mechanical system with the high precision of a quartz movement.

Many models equipped with
Spring Drive is featured in various Grand Seiko models. The main models to be installed are the Ref.SBGA211, which has an impressive snowy dial, the Ref.SBGE213, which has a unique black dial and red 24-hour hand, and the first Grand Seiko diver's model, the Ref. Such as "Ref.SBGA231", which is the successor model of "SBGA029".
From the sports collection with GMT function to the elegance collection, it is available in a wide range of collections, and one of the attractions is that you can choose according to the scene and taste.

High precision unique to quartz
The Spring Drive employs a speed-regulating mechanism "tri-synchronized regulator" that controls the unwinding force of the mainspring with an IC circuit. This is Grand Seiko 's original design that uses the mainspring of a mechanical watch as power and the electric signal of the IC and crystal oscillator used in quartz watches. It is powered by a mainspring like a mechanical wristwatch, but the average monthly difference is about ±10 to 15 seconds, the same as a standard quartz wristwatch.
Seiko's high technological prowess can be seen from the innovative and original mechanism that overturns the common sense of wristwatches.

Mainspring driven high torque
Spring Drive, unlike quartz, has a powerful torque similar to that of a mechanical mainspring. As a result, it is now possible to install mechanisms such as thick, heavy hands and chronographs, which are difficult for ordinary quartz watches. Since the unwinding force of the mainspring is used to move the IC circuit, there is no need to replace the battery like quartz.

In addition, the hands of quartz move forward with a "chitch" every second, but the Spring Drive moves smoothly over the dial. One of the reasons for its popularity is the movement of the hands, which seems to tick away time quietly.
