About Submariner

The Submariner is one of Rolex's most popular watches, along with Daytona, as a symbol of divers' watches.

Behind the birth of the Submariner is the world's first fully waterproof "Oyster Case," which was invented in 1926. The Submariner was developed by taking advantage of the high waterproofness and durability of the Oyster case. Pursuing the needs of professional divers, the Submariner is equipped with a rotating bezel that can measure the dive time from the first model and waterproof performance up to a depth of 100 m. In 1965, we announced the "Submariner Date" with a date display, and we are developing two types of models together with the conventional non-date type.

Rolex Submariner
Simple yet highly recognized design
Since its first announcement in 1953, the Submariner's exterior design hasn't changed much. The only major changes are the standard equipment of the crown guard (1959) and the slightly larger size of the oyster case. Although it has a classic appearance, it is still old, and its simple and refined design, which boasts a high degree of recognition, is also a reason for its popularity.

The early Submariners have undergone minor model changes as the movement evolved. Antique models such as the "red sub" with a red dial logo boast high asset value as a collection item.

World's first diver's watch
The Submariner was born in 1953 as the world's first diver's watch equipped with a waterproof performance up to a depth of 100 m and a rotating bezel that can measure diving time. Following the Oyster case that made it completely waterproof, it can be said to be a historic invention that dramatically improved the waterproof performance of wristwatches.

The Submariner, which established the basic style of divers' watches, continues to be a benchmark as a symbolic presence from the first generation to the current model. Many Rolex watches are derived from the Submariner and are the prototype of today's sports models.

Functionality continued to improve
The Submariner, which was initially announced in 1953 and had a depth of 100m and the following year up to 200m, has improved waterproof performance up to 300m in the current model.

The bezel engraved with a 60-minute scale is equipped with a "reverse rotation prevention bezel" with a stopper that can only move in one direction so that the dive time can be measured reliably and safely. In addition, the chroma light display, which enhances visibility even in dark water, and the highly accurate Automatic winding movement boast high reliability and functionality. It is a model that integrates Rolex's high technology as a tool to accurately measure time in oxygen-free water.
