About Kelly

The Kelly bag is a Ladies bag designed with the involvement of Robert Dumas, the son-in-law of Emile Morris Hermès, the third generation founder of Hermès, and later president of the company. This bag features a trapezoid shape with two triangular gussets, a cut-out flap, and a modern design with two sangron handles. Unlike the Birkin and Haute Couture, it can be worn on the shoulder or across the body with the shoulder strap. It was originally sold in 1935 under the name Sac à Croix, but when Grace Kelly, who became Princess of Monaco in 1956, carried this bag while pregnant and appeared on the cover of LIFE magazine, the story of her hiding her belly with the bag became a hot topic, and it was later renamed the Kelly bag.

Inner and outer stitching for a different look

Kelly bags are made using two different techniques: inside stitching and outside stitching.

Inner stitching:

The inner seam is made by weaving the fabric inwards so that the stitching is not visible, giving the bag a rounded, soft appearance.

Outside stitching:

External stitching is done so that the stitching is visible on the outside, making the corners of the bag stand out and giving the bag a more formal and sharp look. In this way, the look and feel of the bag can change dramatically depending on the manufacturing method.

The difference between the Birkin and the Kelly

The Birkin and Kelly are two of Hermès' most popular bags, each with their own unique characteristics.

[Features of the Birkin]

Rectangular shape: The long rectangular shape is attractive for its storage capacity and ease of use.

Two Handles on the Body: The Birkin has two handles, making it suitable for carrying in the hand or over the arm.

Can be carried with the flap open: Birkin bags are typically carried with the flap open for quick access, making them ideal for everyday use.

[Characteristics of Kelly]

Trapezoidal shape: The trapezoidal shape creates an elegant and classic design.

Single top handle: Kellys typically have one handle and are designed to be carried by hand.

Do not carry with flap open: The Kelly is designed with a flap that closes securely and it is not recommended to carry it with the flap open. Closing the flap gives a classic and sophisticated look.

SHOULDER STRAP: The Kelly comes with a detachable shoulder strap that can be worn over the shoulder or across the body, allowing you to wear it in more than just your hand.
