The unique model name of Portugieser is behind the development of the watch, which was requested by a Portuguese merchant to "make a high-precision watch suitable for voyages." The characteristic large 42 mm and 44.2 mm cases were equipped with highly accurate and durable movements that are also used in pocket watches.

In addition, Portugieser, which has a large case size, is also compatible with complicated mechanisms. Many models in the collection are equipped with minute repeaters, tourbillons, and perpetual calendars.

The Portugieser has a classic and sophisticated orthodox impression, despite the large case size that seems rugged. The neat design, such as simple Arabic numeral indexes, slim and beautiful leaf hands, and a railway scale on the outer circumference, is eye-catching. It is a watch that gives a calm impression with the functional beauty of a large dial in a case design that eliminates waste.

The traditional design of the Portugieser collection, which IWC is proud of, has been passed down for a long time since its introduction, and even now, with new models appearing one after another, it is still inherited.

The Portugieser was not well received by the market when it was first announced, partly because it used a large case that was not mainstream at the time. The Portugieser became popular in 1998 with the release of the Portugieser Chronograph. While maintaining its neat beauty, the distinctive appearance of the two totalizers on the dial attracted attention and quickly became a bestseller.

In recent years, the lineup includes the Portugieser Automatic, which uses IWC's in-house movement, and the Yacht Club, which was integrated into the Portugieser collection in 2010. The collection is even more diverse.
