パテックフィリップは、創業以来高い技術力によって数多くの特許を取得しています。1868年にはスイス初の腕時計を開発し、1933年には24もの機構を搭載した懐中時計を発表。1950年代には自動巻き機構とタイムゾーン機構で特許を取得するなど、三大時計メーカーの中でも優れた技術力を持っているのが特徴です。

一般的な腕時計の場合、31日がない月は手動で日付表示の調整を行わなければいけません。この面倒な調整を不要にしたのが、パテックフィリップが開発した「アニュアルカレンダー(年次カレンダー)」です。この機能は年に一度、2月末にカレンダーを調整するだけで、残りの月はすべて自動で調整されるという優れもの。
文字盤にカレンダー機能を搭載したモデルはどれも人気ですが、特に絶大な支持を集めているのは、「パーペチュアル(永久)カレンダー」搭載モデル。うるう年の調整まで自動で行ってくれ、2100年まで調整が不要なモデルです。
