1969年に世界初のクォーツ式時計を発売し、一躍有名になったセイコー。「クォーツショック」と呼ばれるこの出来事の影響は大きく、機械式腕時計を製造していたメーカーは総じて大打撃を受けます。セイコーのプレステージラインとして、機械式腕時計をメインに作っていたグランドセイコーも例外ではなく、一時は生産を中止していました。
新生グランドセイコーとして1988年に復活を果たしますが、その際にリリースしたのがクォーツ式の腕時計です。年差±10秒の高精度を誇るクォーツ式腕時計は、グランドセイコーの名前を世に知らしめました。年差±10秒という数字は、現在でもグランドセイコーのクォーツモデルにおけるスタンダードとなっています。

In 1993, five years after announcing the highly accurate quartz watch, the ``9F Quartz'' was born.
9F Quartz is an innovative movement that overturns the conventional image of quartz as "thin and light." The use of a powerful, high-torque motor makes it possible to incorporate features such as thick, heavy hands and an instantaneous date calendar, which were difficult to do with conventional quartz watches.

Additionally, 9F quartz, which has a complex mechanism, does not have automatic assembly. It is also unique in that it is carefully assembled by hand by Grand Seiko 's skilled craftsmen.

Currently, Grand Seiko watches are developed around three collections: "Heritage Collection", "Elegance Collection" and "Sports Collection".
